The concrete path gave way to wooden pailings as a lawnmower clipped the morning air and a brother and sister met for the second time. Wandering the rocks they fell apart as one led and the other followed. The northerly sea wind flattened the birds against the crumbling greywacke cliffs, feathers shaking in the shallow crests. Empty beach, full of rocks- they watched. Nets like spiderwebs dragged the buoys out on the current as across the channel another means of escape drifted further and further out of sight. They climbed to the ledge, standing facing the present and the past and what came next. Deep breath. They melt and freeze in one quick instant, sun shines the way through and up and out.
